REVIEW Clay Baker

I first met Hermann Lammers Meyer when he strolled into a honky-tonk where I was playing with my band in Houston, Texas, in 1979.

He introduced himself when we were on a break, saying he was a steel guitarist and leader of a country band called the Emsland Hillbillies, in northern Germany. He handed me a copy of his latest album and pointed out that he had recorded the song “Redneck Mother” in German. I told him that he had to come up onstage with us and sing it, so he did, and the crowd went absolutely bonkers. They wouldn’t let him off the stage so he ended up singing several other classic country songs with us in English.

To make a long story short, we became fast friends and musical cohorts, doing many tours and recording together over the years in Europe and the U.S.

I hadn’t heard from Hermann in a while but had a nice surprise last week when his new album “What Comes Next” arrived in my mailbox.

Of course, as soon as I got home I had to put the album on and must say it has been in heavy rotation in the Blaker household ever since.

The album contains 14 tracks of some of the best real, traditional country music that I’ve heard in a long time. Hermann put together an all-star cast of musicians to record the album at Bill Green’s BGM studio in San Antonio, Texas.

The lineup most notably features Red Volkaert on lead guitar, who played many years with Merle Haggard; and Jay Dee Maness on steel guitar, who played with the Byrds, Gram Parsons, the Desert Rose Band and on many famous recording sessions in L.A. California.

The album starts with the title track, “What Comes Next”, a country classic written by acclaimed songwriter Jerry Crutchfield, and ends with another classic “Don’t We All Have the Right”, written by the late, great Roger Miller.

In between are a lot of incredible songs, many of which were written by Hermann himself. He even included a Beatles song and a Bee Gees tune done in a traditional country style. I think my favorite tracks are the duets with Johnny Bush, Norma Jean, Jennifer Felan and Randy Floyd. Lots of good singing in there, folks.

This album is a must for your collection if you love traditional country music.

Even if you are into the modern country you need to get this album anyway, because Hermann just might convert you and send you on the righteous path of country music salvation.

Congratulations are in order to Hermann for making this great album. And it needs to be said that Hermann Lammers Meyer and his new album are the real deal. Do yourself a favor and go buy this album immediately.
